Frequently asked questions

1. Buying a yacht

Start with our inventory and tell us what you have in mind. Every listing has a broker attached to it, so you can send a question straight from the vessel page, or call the office nearest to you.

If you are still deciding, a short call is usually the fastest way forward. We will ask how you plan to use the yacht, where you will keep it and who will run it, then come back with a shortlist that fits.

Yes. Viewings are arranged through the listing broker, at the marina where the yacht is berthed. Our offices run from San Diego to Seattle, Kona, Wrightsville Beach and Charleston, and we regularly show yachts outside our own docks as well.

A sea trial normally follows once an offer is in place, so you feel the yacht under way before anything is final.

In broad strokes it runs like this:

  • a written offer, with a deposit held in a client trust account
  • survey and sea trial, at a date that suits you and the yard
  • acceptance of the vessel, or a renegotiation based on what the survey found
  • closing, documentation and registration, then delivery

Your broker runs the paperwork and the schedule, and stays with the deal through to handover.

Yes. Every listing page carries a payment calculator so you can model a term, a rate and a down payment before you talk to anyone. When you are ready, we introduce you to marine lenders and help you get prequalified.

Rates and terms come from the lender, not from us, so treat the calculator as an estimate rather than an offer.

Both. We represent new builds from the brands we carry and we broker pre-owned yachts across the range, from day boats to long-range motor yachts.

If you are choosing between a new build and a pre-owned yacht, we will lay out the trade-offs on delivery time, specification and cost of ownership before you decide.

2. Selling a yacht

We look at recent sales of comparable yachts, what is currently on the market, the specification and refit history of your yacht and how it presents in person. You get a valuation range with the reasoning behind it, not just a number.

Send the details through the valuation form on our Sell Your Yacht page and a broker will come back to you.

Photography and video of the yacht, a full listing page with specification and deck plans, distribution to the brokerage networks, our own audience and newsletter, presence at the boat shows we attend, and one broker who owns the sale from first enquiry to closing.

You also get straight reporting: what enquiries came in, who viewed the yacht and what the market said about the price.

It depends on the model, the asking price and the season, so anyone who promises you a date is guessing. What we can promise is honest feedback: if the market is telling us the price is wrong, you will hear it early rather than after a quiet six months.

Yes, and it is a common move. One team handles both sides, so the timing of the sale and the delivery of the next yacht are planned together rather than colliding.

3. Ownership and service

The running of the yacht, so that ownership feels like use rather than work: maintenance planned across the year, yard periods booked and supervised, crew support, vendor and invoice management, insurance and documentation dates tracked, and reporting you can read in a couple of minutes.

The programme is built around how much you want to be involved, from a light touch to full oversight. See Yacht Management.

Our own marina and boatyard in San Diego handles service, repair and refit work, and our service team coordinates yard periods at other locations along the coast when that is closer to where you keep the yacht.

See the Service and Maintenance page for what the yard covers, and the Locations page for where we are.

Yes. Service, maintenance and management are open to any owner, whether the yacht came through us or not.

That is most of what management is for. Systems are checked on a schedule, work is carried out and signed off, and you get updates with photographs, so the yacht is ready the week you fly in rather than the month after.

4. Working with us

Our home port is San Diego, where we also run the marina and boatyard, and our brokers work from offices in Newport Harbor, Marina del Rey, Sausalito, Seattle, Kona, Wrightsville Beach and Charleston.

The Locations page has the address, phone number and opening hours for each one.

Call +1 (888) 693-8099 or write to info@jeffbrownyachts.com, and you will be put in touch with the broker who covers your area or the yacht you are asking about. Each office has its own direct line on the Locations page.

We show at the major boat shows and host owner events, model unveilings and dock parties through the season. The Events page lists what is coming up, with a request to attend on each one.

They go to the broker who can answer you, and nowhere else. Our Privacy Policy sets out what we collect, how we use it and how cookies work on this site, and our Terms and Conditions cover the use of the site itself.

Nothing matches that search. Try a different word, or ask us directly below.
